
A practical framework for reading clinical research without relying on headlines alone.
When you read a study, first ask what question the researchers were trying to answer and who was actually studied. A result can be scientifically interesting without applying to every person or every setting.
1. Start with the research question
Look for the primary objective and the outcome the researchers planned to measure. This helps distinguish the main result from secondary or exploratory findings.
2. Check the population
Note the number of participants, age range, health characteristics, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and whether the population resembles the group you are interested in understanding.
3. Understand the intervention and comparator
Identify what participants received and what they were compared with. In a controlled trial, the comparator might be placebo or another treatment. Differences in dose, duration and comparator can affect how results should be interpreted.
4. Look at endpoints
Separate the primary endpoint from secondary outcomes. Ask whether the endpoint is a measurement such as body weight, a laboratory value, symptoms, or a clinical event, and whether it was measured over a meaningful period.
5. Read the results, not just the headline
Look for the size of the effect, uncertainty around the estimate, participant numbers, and how many people completed the study. Relative percentages can sound large, so absolute changes and the underlying population matter too.
6. Read the limitations
Good studies explain limitations such as short follow-up, missing data, differences between groups, narrow participant populations or outcomes that may not predict longer-term effects.
7. Read safety information separately
Benefits and safety are different questions. Look for adverse events, serious adverse events, discontinuations and any warnings or exclusions described by the researchers. Investigational medicines require ongoing evaluation as more data become available.
